Overview
Experiences of industrialized or newly industrialized countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan show that the industrial development of these countries has been assisted by a strong base of small to medium size industries that were specializing in performing outsourced work. However, in Sri Lanka such a small scale industrial base is not sufficiently available. BAFF training and spin offs help establish a small scale equipped industrial base to support the larger industries in the country.
The Building A Future Foundation in Sri Lanka identified the areas of training in a manner that they easily form interlocking value chains. In that way a sustainable market can be created and leverage is maximized.
The areas of training provided to youth are: boat building, sail and mast making, mechanical and electrical engineering and polyurethane and molded rubber products manufacturing. Training is provided by local as well as foreign trainers. End 2010, nearly 200 youth were provided with training in the above areas.
The training workshops are located in Weligama on the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
Each trainee receives two meals a day and a monthly allowance including social charges (EPF/ETF).
All training programs include written and spoken English, marketing, small business management, basic bookkeeping, IT (Computer Aided Designing, Computer Aided Manufacturing), internet, e-mail and administrative software.
Upon successful training, trainees receive a certificate recognized by the National Apprenticeship and Industrial Training Authority under Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission of Sri Lanka.
