Sails & Mast Making

The Building A Future Foundation has set up a sail making unit in 2007 equipped with 8 sewing machines.  Youth were trained at the Clothing Industry Training Institute in Sri Lanka and at an export oriented sail manufacturer established in Sri Lanka. BAFF sail making unit manufactures sails for the Ruhunu Sailing Association, for the innovative fishing boats developed by the Foundation and for local as well as export oriented leisure boat manufacturers.

To meet the demand for manufactured composite masts at an acceptable price, BAFF has ordered the design of a mast making machine from a French company. Based on those drawings, the machine was built within BAFF premises to train youth in mast making. Today, youth trained by BAFF are able to manufacture mast made of advanced material such as carbon.
