As per a census of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in 2006/2007, it exists more than 17 000 fishing boat of 6 m with engine propulsion among the 42 000 sea fishing boats in Sri Lanka. In 2007, the Building A Future Foundation took the initiative to retrofit several of those boats by fixing a mast and sails on it in view of reducing the fuel consumption for environmental and economic reasons. The hull was slightly modified to insure the stability of the boat. This double propulsion mono hull boat is designed for one day coastal fishing with lines or nets fishing methods. Fuel reduction of 20 to 25% is possible with the presence of sails.

Retrofit

The sailing plan can be optimized in terms of dimensions and performance.
The presence of the insulated ice box allows the storage of the fish in ice while fishing and the cover of the ice box can be used as a kind of table. The ice box and the watertight well balanced side ballasts bring necessary buoyancy and stability to the boat.
