Mission & Activities


 

 “To improve the living conditions of underprivileged population especially youth depending on the resources of the ocean through building capacity, empowerment and economic self-sufficiency with an environmental, social and sustainable approach”.

 

Building A Future Foundation initiated its program in Sri Lanka and intends to replicate its innovative fishing concepts internationaly at a larger scale by regrouping key actors of the sector and by establishing strategic partnerships with organisations well established in coastal regions of Africa, Middle East, South and South East Asia.

 

 

To achieve its mission, BAFF implement the following strategy:

 

1) Carry out research and development in innovating and sustainable practices in the fisheries sector of the region.

2) Train underprivileged population especially youth in related activities (boat building, sails and mast making,... ).

3) Create sustainable employment through the setting up of conventional or social businesses.

BAF Foundation initiated its activities in Sri Lanka around the following main activities:

 

RESEARCH AND DEVELPOMENT: It introduces and stimulates innovative technology, sustainable industry, skills and individuals in economic sectors existing or not existing in the region. In this respect, BAFF has set up a large project for the conceptualization and the construction of innovating fishing boat using sails: the SASHIMI PROJECT.

 

TRAINING: It trains underprivileged youth into innovative activities and new skills which has a potential of economic development in the region. It empower youth with the required hard and soft skills.

 

EMPLOYMENT CREATION: It creates employment through the creation and incubation of commercial spinoffs on the model of the social business with the objective of making them self-sustainable. It attracts external entrepreneurs to set up new business in the region in cooperation with BAFF to provide employment opportunities to the well trained youth in related activities such as boat building, renewable energy, etc.

 

In the recent years, BAFF is also working on disseminating the use of the Sashimi boat and REPLICATING its approach in other coastal areas of Sri Lanka and the developing world. For instance, in view of spreading BAFF’s innovative fishing boat concepts with sails, BAFF sealed a cooperation with the Nedsom Foundation in Somalia and is presently in negotiation with public and private organizations settled in coastal areas in Angola and in Madagascar to replicate successful fisheries projects to generate economic activities and employment for the benefit of social communities of those specific areas.
