2010: Industrialization of the double powered trimaran Sashimi MK1

Published on Thursday, 01 July 2010

The prototype of the 13,5 m trimaran fishing boat designed by Jim Wilshire and built by Sri Lankan trainees under the supervision of an Australian expert boat builder was successfully launched in June 2007 in Weligama waters on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. After one year testing by local fishermen, the boat design was slightly modified and improved. In June 2010, the first industrialized version of boat is nearly completed. The first boat was ordered by the Nedsom Foundation and will soon sail up to Somalia.

This model was proposed by the Building A Future Foundation in the frame of the “Ten year Development policy frame work of Fisheries and Aquatic resources 2007 -2016” published by the Government of Sri Lanka and after many discussions with Ceynor, a 100% government owned company acting under the Ministry of fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Sri Lanka.

After the tsunami, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations highlighted problems related to the fishing industry in Sri Lanka. The BAF Foundation intends to propose solutions to some of them with the development of the Sashimi project as presented in the below table.
